Sony announced Helldivers 2 and Horizon Zero Dawn film adaptations at CES today, expanding the adaptations of its owned and controlled IP after adaptations like The Last of Us, Twisted Metal, and Uncharted. Ghost of Tsushima is also getting an anime adaptation.
The announcements were made during the PlayStation keynote where Productions Head Asad Qizilbash announced, along with Screen Gems president, Ashley Brucks, that the companies would produce a Helldivers 2 film. The game was such a success out of the gate that movement on a film is going ahead to try and capture the flavor and excitement. Horizon Zero Dawn will become a film through a partnership between PlayStation Productions and Columbia Pictures. That film project is in the early stages of development after prior attempts to adapt Aloy’s story to a different medium fell through.
Crunchyroll and Aniplex announced together that they are working on an anime series adaptation of Ghost of Tsushima. The 2020 action-adventure title from Sucker Punch Productions tells the story of a samurai named Jin Sakai (who was recently featured in an episode of Amazon’s animated Secret Level series). There is already a film adaptation in development for the game’s story. That film is in production and will be directed by John Wick director Chad Stahelski.
The anime series adaptation, Ghost of Tsushima: Legends, is inspired by the original game and by the game's multiplayer mode. Multiplayer features several modes, including a narrative mode, and overall, was based on Japanese mythology and featured supernatural enemies and realms. The adaptation will be made by Kamikaze Douga and the soundtrack will be overseen by Sony Music. It will premiere on the Crunchyroll service in 2027. As for the film adaptations on the way, there are no dates for those yet.
