Diablo III  is starting off a new year with a portal to the past, with the return of The Darkening of Tristram anniversary event.

The annual anniversary event will let you enjoy an homage to the earlier days of Diablo, and of course, grab some rewards.  If you've taken part in the event in the past, it will be familiar but you begin by trailing mysterious cultists who are causing trouble in Sanctuary. Of course, if you are causing trouble in Sanctuary, And it's notable, then you must really stand out. So, hunt them down in Adventure Mode and, after solving some clues, step into the portal to the past and relive some of the early days of just how the darkness took over.

Once you're there, you'll see a familiar cathedral that you can explore, and inside you'll find enemies that should look familiar, iconic Diablo items, and more. All of this is now presented in the Diablo III engine, but it should evoke memories for those who've been longtime fans, or present something fun for those that are new here. As you explore the cathedral, of course there will be an opportunity to challenge the Dark Lord.

Naturally, it wouldn't be Diablo without some loot. You'll be able to earn some rewards by completing activities during the entire anniversary event. Some of the stuff you can grab include transmogrification effects, pets, portraits,  and you’ll get to unlock some shiny new achievements. If you completed the event in the past, it should be somewhat familiar but some rewards are designed to be more challenging to find than others.

The cultists already arrived on December 31st, but the portal that leads you into the past will open tomorrow, January 3rd, at 4 p.m. PST. This event will end on January 31st at 4 p.m. PST.
