While it will be a while before there’s a new entry in the main Witcher series, CD Projekt Red has announced (and released) a brand new expansion for Gwent: The Witcher Card Game. This new standalone expansion, Gwent: Rogue Mage, is available now on PC, Mac (with M1 chip and above), and on mobile (iOS and Android).
Gwent: Rogue Mage is an expansion, but it is a single player experience, so you won’t have to have prior releases to play it. You won’t even need to be online to play. The game is set around the time of the Conjunction of Spheres, hundreds of years before Geralt and familiar characters we know were active in the world. Monsters are loose and, if people are to survive, they’ll need some help. This is where the title mage comes in.
You play as Alzur, a young mage. Join Alzur and his companion, Lily as they take on a quest that could build a living weapon that will beat back the monstrous threats. The game blends gameplay of the original Gwent, and those familiar with it will get a head start on learning how to succeed here. It also blends deck building and strategy with elements of roguelikes and storytelling.
As you make your way across the lands, Alzur will take on challenges to keep progressing to meet his goals. In a land that is threatened to be overrun by monsters, of course you'll encounter monsters and be able to harvest mutagens as materials in your experiments. You’ll have many opportunities to acquire new cards, some of which will have very powerful spells if you’re lucky to get the best ones, and, over time, to upgrade your decks. With the right series of spells and strategies, you'll even be able to learn powerful combos.
Cross-progression is available with a GOG account, which you can use to transfer progress across supported platforms. Other features include dozens of modifiers to customize the game’s experience and its difficulty, treasures to win, achievements, and leaderboards for bragging rights.
