Back in 2023, following the Elder Dragon Saga, Guild Wars 2 switched to a new release cadence, featuring smaller, more frequently released expansions. Since then, they’ve released their annual expansions in August. Game Director Josh Davis announced a release date shift for the next, as-yet unannounced expansion. It will now launch in October.

The move is being done for the sixth expansion for a very simple reason - they simply need more time. “We've made the decision to shift our next expansion launch to October. This extra time will allow us to ensure the expansion meets our quality standards without crunching,” reads the announcement

The Janthir Wilds expansion is still due one final update, following the releases of Godspawn in November and Repentance last week. Davis reassures us that the delay in release is only for the new expansion and that the release for that last update to Janthir Wilds will not change. We can likely expect that by summer.

After the upcoming sixth expansion launches, we won’t know when the quarterly updates for that expansion will begin to roll out. Yet, it would make sense if those also shifted accordingly.

The Guild Wars 2 team will be giving more info on the upcoming expansion sometime this summer and will continue with events, refreshes, and content.
