The second Guild Wars 2: Janthir Wilds update is coming on March 11th, and the team has a new lore blog centered on the mursaat to prepare us all.
This does recap some of the lore and contains spoilers, so if you haven't caught up, you can read the recap or finish playing through it. They are sharing this lore today to also announce some new mysteries on the way and some dark new magic.
The devs dive right into who the mursaat are, a species of tall humanoid spellcasters whose presence has been felt in Tyria for a long time. They’re elongated and float instead of walking, something that makes them stand out. That isn't the only thing that makes them stand out and they shouldn't be underestimated.
Originally from Nayos, the Realm of Dreams, they preceded the Elder Dragons and survived their rise way before even the first Guild Wars story took place. Feeling slighted by their allies stepping back from efforts to stop Zhaitan, they waged war from their resentment and created a weapon known as Spectral Agony.
Yeah, don’t underestimate them. Or their ability to hold a grudge.
They continued to exert their influence through efforts like manipulation of artifacts and secretly influencing people.
How will this tie into the next update?
The mursaat used shadowcraft, a form of magic that let them reveal long distances through a shadowed realm in Tyria. Guess who is going to gain access to a form of this magic soon.
“A new Mastery line in the next major release will allow the wayfinder to tap into this same magic after learning more about the mursaat and exploring the outer ruins of one of their great cities.”
You’ll also get to explore an ancient mursaat city, Bava Nisos, and uncover secrets. Like a lot more details about this update pretty soon.
