Greedfall Team Reveals Its World-Building Inspirations
The Greedfall Steam page has been updated with an informative new developer blog that reveals the inspirations behind the creation of the game's world. Spiders devs talk about several key references from the real world and cinema played key roles in creating the world and the characters that inhabit it.
For the world itself, Spiders wanted to create environments that are completely different than those found in Technomancer, its most recently released game. To do so, "Spiders delved into vast open-air environments, forests, and lush greenery," but also worked to avoid typical fantasy tropes. Developers then landed on 17th century baroque artwork as its primary inspiration. This includes Rembrandt, Jan Steen, and Vermeer.
For the world's inhabitants, Spiders looked to the cinema and at masterpieces such as Princess Mononoke and Brotherhood of the Wolf. On the literary side, the narrative team took hints from The Three Musketeers, Twenty Years After, and The Vicomte de Bragelotte as well as a number of real world events.
