Godfall Developer Counterplay Games 'Disbanded', Was Working With Jack Emmert's Jackalyptic Games

Godfall developer Counterplay Games seems to have been “disbanded” last year. While it is not clear if the studio has completely shut down, there have been some layoffs. There are also no additional projects listed.

The looter shooter, melee slasher action-RPG blend, was an early PlayStation 5 launch exclusive before making it to PC,  PlayStation 4 and Xbox.

The news comes via a report from PlayStation LifeStyle, which excerpts a LinkedIn post from a Jackalyptic Games employee, says that their team and Counterplay were working on a project together, but unfortunately, “CPG was disbanded”. The employee also shared several other LinkedIn profiles from affected Counterplay devs who were now looking for work.  MMO vet Jack Emmert-led Jackalyptic Games is making its first project, a Warhammer MMO, but it isn't clear if this was what Counterplay had been partnering with them on.

In our review back in 2020, Mitch praised Godfall’s graphics and art design, combat, the range of monsters available and good endgame content but found the story to be thin and the mission structure needed work.

It’s clear that, for those who were hoping to leave challenging times in the games industry behind us in 2024, unfortunately things still seem unsteady. Industry instability continues into the new year, following the shutdown of Toadman Interactive and other downsizing already in 2025.

Counterplay’s website is still up, and Godfall remains available to buy. There have been no official announcements other than the now-surfacing reports that point to  layoffs happening late last year.
