Gloomrot, V Rising’s first major content update, the promised free expansion that will introduce multi-layered castles, a new biome, and much more, will be out in May.
When Stunlock Studios experienced the massive response that its vampire survival MMO got last year, the team revealed that there was more content on the way, but that the response had shaped their plans. Not only was there more room to go bigger with their new content, but the team could spend time overhauling the systems the game’s foundation was built upon, to both strengthen performance and existing systems, but to be able to expand upon those too.
Gloomrot will bring a new biome into the game, “a land of equal parts filth, ambition, brilliance, and madness!” according to a new devblog. Gloomrot South and Gloomrot North make up the new region, about the side of Dunley Farmlands, each with their own features, enemies, challenges, and technologies. You’ll also be able to plant some roots there, of the multi-level castle kind.
Choosing to release the new content in May also coincides with the first anniversary since V Rising entered Early Access. New content is on the way, and the team is adamant that this will be an expansion level event and update that will change the game.
We can expect new weapons (including a Greatsword) and weapon skills, new areas, new enemies, additional points of interest, some important quality of life improvements, an overhaul of the entire spell system and spell schools, with a new spell school on the way. V Rising will also add the Jewel system, which Stunlock announced as a new way to customize your spells. There will also be Legendary weapons introduced, and a revamped land claiming process that introduces a territories system, for wider, open spaces to use as you like. To support this, there will be new structures and new building options, including streamlined ones. Trading Posts will open to let you buy supplies with coin.
All of this and those new ways to build a castle will also come with Gloomrot. Not only are there new options for castle layouts, including making them large and tall, there are safety features, like railings, and a new way to get around these much larger spaces, castle teleporters. These will be paired and craftable, so you can place them in your castle for quick access to the other location.
There’s lots more on the way, and the full devblog has not just details on the content, but why Stunlock had to take time to get this right, what the limitations in the original build presented, and how they’ve worked on Gloomrot.
