HoYoverse and the United States Federal Trade Commission have reached a settlement over Genshin Impact lootboxes. As a result, we now know how much trying to get a character might cost you, lootbox sales to teens get new rules, and age verification is coming for US players.
Under the terms of the settlement, Cognosphere LLC (HoYoverse) pays a $20 million fine and will have to block anyone under 16 from making in-game purchases without express parental consent. The initial complaint from the FTC said that the company had misled players and obscured the real cost of character pulls and odds of getting limited-time offerings.
Part of this settlement now means mandatory age verification for players in the United States starting on May 20th. The team announced the rolloutof this verification process will begin and some of the key dates and terms to remember.
If you don't provide age verification info by July 18th, your account will be suspended, friends list and chat records will be deleted. If you don't verify everything by July 2026, your account is likely to be permanently deleted.
Other terms of the settlement include requirements to disclose lootbox odds and exchange rates, and a ban on selling loot boxes using virtual currency without an option to purchase directly with real money.
