While this past September’s Frostpunk 2 coasted through its first few months of release with just about 600,000 copies sold, the 11 Bit team is already looking forward—by looking back to the original.
11 Bit has announced an Unreal Engine 5 edition of its original Frostpunk game, with this one titled Frostpunk: 1886.
The year in this title calls back to the game’s original New London setting, as this’ll essentially be a fully-rebuilt Unreal Engine 5 version of the game (as other titles such as the new Oblivion remake have done). It’ll also introduce the new “Purpose” path alongside the original “Faith” and “Order” paths, per the announcement post on the game.
The Steam page explains as well that long-awaited official mod support will be part of the release capabilities, along with more DLCs and content they couldn’t manage in the original:
“While limited by our in-house Liquid Engine on which the first Frostpunk was created, we’ve been looking for other ways to expand the game,” the Steam page reads about this updated edition. “The development of Frostpunk 2 made us realize how much the experience of the original could be improved using the Unreal Engine. It became apparent that rebuilding Frostpunk in the Unreal Engine will make it a richer, more immersive experience with enhanced visuals and performance.”
Unfortunately, Frostpunk 1886 a long way out, with an estimated release date of 2027 given. However, that means there’s more time to enjoy Frostpunk 2, which the team teases in the announcement will be getting plenty of DLC soon.
