Fornite is the juggernaut which seemingly cannot be stopped, it seems, if recent revenue numbers are anything to go by.
In a report by SuperData which looks at digital games, the firm notes that Fortnite brought in $1.8 billion in revenue for 2019. This marks the second year in a row where Epic’s free-to-play game has taken the top spot. The next closest game, Dungeon Fighter Online, generated $1.6 billion in revenue.
Digital games in general are up 3% YoY generating $120.1 billion in 2019. Of that, 64.4 billion was on mobile, $29.6 billion on PC, and $15.4 billion on console.
Some other interesting stats:
- The games and interactive media industry grew 4% in a year with few market movers
- Free-to-play games accounted for 4 out of every 5 dollars spent on digital games in 2019 thanks to strong performances from mobile games
- XR revenue climbed 26% to $6.3 billion in 2019 thanks to new headsets like the Oculus Quest
