Square Enix has unveiled a cinematic trailer for its action RPG Forspoken ahead of its scheduled January 24th release date. The teaser gets into the action as protagonist Frey has a decision to make.

Frey finds herself in the fantasy world of Athia, one that is as dangerous as it is beautiful. The magical combat in the game has been a highlight the team at Square Enix has been showing off for a while, emphasizing the potential for some speedy magical parkour style fighting. The cinematic emphasizes the differences and sometimes, the similarities, between Frey’s two experiences.

We follow her as she runs down the streets of New York City, being chased and then through the woods in Althia being chased by creatures. “Run, and it will chase you to the ends of the world,” comes the narration, switching between those two scenes as Frey demonstrates her developing powers. “Fight, and it will reveal your true potential,” the voiceover comes over a scene of Frey, being chased, decides to blast one of the creatures, as she heads towards a cliff.

That cliff represents the decision she has to make, but a good visual metaphor for a one-minute teaser. Of course, we wouldn't have much of a game if she didn't fight, so we see her start by taking on the creature that rises from the other side of the cliff, and then another series of movement through and over some rocky, hilly terrain,  before dropping back into the dark woods and another threatening monster.

Forspoken got a demo last month that was met with some deep criticism. While some found the taste of the game’s combat to be fun, there were other complaints about Frey’s dialogue and the script, and other criticism of the world itself. However, in an interview with Genmatsu, director Takeshi Aramaki says that the demo is outside of the main game and expressed his confidence in its eventual release.

You can find out more about the game over at Forspoken.
