Foamstars, the quirky Splatoon-style shooter where teams attempt to cover the other with gobs of foam, has a release date. The PlayStation exclusive will be hitting Sony's consoles on February 6th, and will be free for PlayStation Plus members.
The free period will only last a month, though, meaning those PlayStation Plus subscribers who want to visit Bath Vegas and put their foam-slinging skills to the test for free will need to act fast. After March 4th, Foamstars will sell for $29.99. This is a PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 exclusive, and there don't seem to be any plans to bring the foam party to other platforms.
So what do you get when you jump into the glitz and glamor of Bath Vegas? Three PvP modes will launch with the shooter, from the deathmatch style Smash the Star to the crazy-sounding Happy Bath Survival, which sees teams split into offensive and defensive sides to support each other and win the round.
The one I'm most looking forward to finally trying is Rubber Duck Party, which sees teams race to the center of a stage to fight over, you guessed it, a rubber duck. This sounds like a Foamstars take on soccer, as the two teams angle to get the rubber duck into an opposing goal, but it sounds like it could be a ridiculously good time.
As with all live service games, Foamstars also plans post-launch content with a seasonal pass - both a free tier and an optional premium pass for purchase. That seasonal pass will sell for $5.99 and give players access immediately to seasonal characters and cosmetics. However, the Square Enix team is planning a year's worth of free updates with new content, maps, characters, and game modes.
It all kicks off on February 6th, but if you're eager to check out what we think of Foamstars ahead of its release, be sure to catch our coverage from Summer Games Fest, which became our most surprising game of the show.
