Square Enix has announced that Foamstars is going free to play in October, and the game will no longer require a PlayStation Plus subscription to play.
The game will go free to play on October 4th at 1am UTC/ 9pm ET on October 3rd, and it will no longer be a premium title. Once the free to play change happens, you'll be able to download the game on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 without the previously-required subscription.
So far, there's no update as to what will happen to pricing, microtransactions, and if seasons and season passes will continue in the same or a similar way. Since Foamstars will go free to play in just about five weeks, we expect more details on all of those things soon.
The game was only released back in February, with PlayStation Plus members able to download the game for free for one month before it went to a $29.99 retail purchase. For those who bought the game and downloaded it before this shift, Square Enix will give out a special Legacy gift. The gift will include:
- 12 exclusive color-variant Bubble Beastie skins
- 1 exclusive Slide Board design
- 1 title: “Legacy
It seems that the colorful foam shooter may not have completely found its place, even as the team continued releasing seasons. One thing that was not announced in the transition to free to play, is any potential release on other platforms. so it seems that at least for now, Foamstars will remain a PlayStation exclusive.
