The Xbox Wire mistakenly got those awaiting the launch of Final Fantasy XIV on the platform excited with a post saying that the open beta had gone live. The long-running MMORPG is set to debut on Xbox sometime this spring, with beta coming soon.
Back at FanFest last summer, Xbox’ Phil Spencer appeared on stage to confirm that Square Enix and Microsoft were going to bring the game to Xbox, following years of PlayStation console exclusivity. When the MMO does arrive, there will be cross-play across all versions, letting everyone pick their favorite platform and place to play. The next expansion, Dawntrail, will also hit Xbox.
At the time of that announcement, they confirmed that the release on Xbox Series X|S would happen in spring 2024, with an open beta sometime during early 2024, within the 6.5x “Growing Light” patch frame.
In the incorrect post (archived here), they mentioned that the famous Free Trial would be applicable during beta and all progress would carry over to the full release. There’s also a getting started guide that we’re likely to see when the beta really does go live.
Xbox Wire deleted the post and announced their error with a post on X (Twitter) saying:
“We incorrectly posted news this morning regarding the Final Fantasy XIV Online Open Beta. We'll follow-up with the correct date when available. We apologize for any confusion -Xbox Wire Team”

While the beta should be going live sometime soon, neither Microsoft or Square Enix has offered a date just yet.
