In an interview at the Tokyo Game Show between Nier creator Yoko Taro and Square Enix producer Naoki Yoshida, there was talk of the team’s commitment to Final Fantasy XIV until 2021, with the game considered to be a major focus. Yoshida is also working on Final Fantasy XVI.
The article on Kotaku points to Yoshida’s dedication to FFXIV as FFXVI is also under development. The confirmation that FFXIV will be a major focus until 2021 should put aside any fears that the development of FFXVI will get in the way of any upcoming or future content in the interim.
“Today, we’re doing a program on [FF]XIV. We want to focus on [FFXIV’s] development until 2021.”
The quote does not focus on what a 2021 roadmap would look like or what content would become available throughout 2021, but judging by Square Enix’s past commitments to its Final Fantasy games, it’s unlikely we will see Final Fantasy XIV fall to the backburner despite FFXVI’s development. Square Enix has been working to release content updates regularly, despite some delays due to the pandemic.
