FFXIV's 7.2 Special Site Heats Up Post-Dawntrail Storyline Speculation, Brings More FFIX References

We know now there’s less than a month until Final Fantasy 14 drops Patch 7.2, titled “Seekers of Eternity,” and now that we’re closer yet to the release, the team has dropped the Special Site. This new page on the FFXIV site goes over the details of the MSQ and its accompanying content, as well as what else will be arriving with the patch.

So far, what’s already been shown has FFXIV players talking like wild, including a quite elaborate description of the new MSQ dungeon—and one piece of seemingly unintended media has caused an extra frenzy. Plus, old Final Fantasy 9 players are quite excited about some of the more blatantly obvious references to the game that have shown up on the page.

If Patch 7.2 is at least as interesting as the prior patch story-wise, we have a lot to look forward to.

MAJOR FFXIV PATCH 7.1 SPOILERS BELOW

The end of Patch 7.1 had some crazy revelations, including a surprise return of something at least resembling Sphene, who was, of course, the big bad evil guy of Dawntrail at the end. However, we also got a hint that someone, or something, that sounds suspiciously like her popped out of the Living Memory tower where “she” dwelled.

Now, the 7.2 site explains that we’ll be delving deeper into that conundrum.

“The Queen of Reason has made a miraculous return, and bears a message to her troubled subjects: become Endless, and eternal life is yours,” the site teases. “While such a promise may provide solace to some, others still fear the icy touch of death approaches.”

There’s also a massive preview, which is more to say a full-on spoiler, of what’s to come regarding the dungeon and trial, which are both heavy references to Dawntrail’s own referencing of Final Fantasy 9. The full description of the new dungeon, The Underkeep, arrived onto the site:

In the waning days of the old kingdom, the people of Alexandria sought a way to survive as their home sank into the earth below. They built a towering structure that enveloped the royal castle itself, and as the moons came and went, Everkeep grew to soaring heights. Yet some say that the castle has withstood the ravages of time, and stands even now in the city's foundation as a symbol of bygone glory.

Accompanying screenshots look quite some FFIX locales. And while the trial doesn’t say much new, everyone’s pretty damned sure it resembles Beatrix, an Alexandrian soldier in FFIX who you get to briefly play as.

In addition to all of this, speculation is heavy around a screenshot that was part of the site’s MSQ media, but got taken down minutes after the site went live.

The screenshot shows a petite figure from the back speaking to the Warrior of Light and Wuk Lamat in the middle of Solution Nine. Players are speculating that it could be Sphene herself, as she matches the general figure, though there’s one character in the key art that’s unaccounted for thus far.

While there’s a lot shown, and it may feel like a “trailer spoil the movie” situation, we know that FFXIV has a tricky but often effective habit of hiding its plot’s cards well, so we’ll see how this actually plays out.

However, most importantly, we also know now that the most important character of Dawntrail makes his return: the Cornservant, who solves (minor) crises and brings joy throughout the continents of Tural through the power of corn and the many ways it can be culinarily expressed.

We’ll most likely know when all of the content drops throughout the 7.2X patch cycle once the next Letter from the Producer Live (a.k.a. the “Live Letter”) happens next Friday, March 14. For now, the Special Site gives a general overview of all of the types of content that’ll drop with the patch—but beware the spoilers, of course.
