Prior to the Early Access and official launch periods of Dawntrail, the Final Fantasy 14 developers warned players that there might be congestion. However, despite these forewarnings—and thanks in part due to some measures taken—it seems FFXIV is handling its biggest concurring player count in over a decade.
“I would like to thank you all for your patience and cooperation in dealing with server congestion during the early access for Dawntrail,” noted director Naoki Yoshida in an official Lodestone post about upcoming job changes. “With your support, we were able to reach a record number of concurrent users we’ve not seen since the release of A Realm Reborn in 2013.”
In preparation for the uptick of players, FFXIV devs took measures to limit server crowding, including locking down travel between primarily-used servers. However, as a player on Crystal, it seems they’ve quietly unlocked World Visit on Crystal, which works within the same Data Center—a great sign for the stability of these servers.
At this point, the only officially-announced server updates since the launch have been from the X/Twitter social media team, which informed players about peak launch weekend hours. The Aether Data was full, and so the team recommended that players move to Dynamis instead to avoid queues.
There have been a few off issues here and there, with the biggest likely being Xbox players crashing due to memory fragmentation issues, though the team is making up for it with a few days of free gameplay time.
