The Elder Scrolls: Legends, the free to play card battler from Bethesda, set in the Elder Scrolls universe, will shut down in January.
For anyone who played this game (or that it even existed), you may remember that the last update happened years ago. Development was “put on hold” Indefinitely back in late 2019, so the shutdown is likely not affecting that many players.
Put on hold, in this case, essentially meant that it would still run and people could access their cards, buy shop items, and play competitively. Nothing really happened in those past 5 years, so it is no surprise that Bethesda wants to save some money on server costs and wrap it up. Even the game’s own website hasn’t seen an update in almost a year and a half.
According to The Elder Scrolls: Legends’ Steam page, the game is no longer available and details on closure have been posted in-game. According to Rock Paper Shotgun, that message to players on the remaining time left says:
The Elder Scrolls: Legends servers will permanently shut down on January 30, 2025. From now until January 30, 2025, all items in the store and entry into in-game events will be available for 1 gold each, so you can enjoy all the content Legends has to offer. On that date, servers will be shut down and the game will be inaccessible. Thank you for playing and we hope you have enjoyed your time in Legends.”
While some free to play titles have been finding a home with offline modes, new apps, or other player-run options, it looks like the tables are set for the final games here soon.
