Path of Exile's upcoming expansion, Trial of the Ancestors, was shown off during yesterday's ExileCon 2023 keynote. The expansion, which launches on August 18th, brings reworked Ascendancy classes, a new challenge league, as well as brings back the Forbidden Sanctum.

The update comes on August 18th, and brings gameplay much like you'd see in an auto-battler, TFT-style game. Chris Wilson, the producer of Path of Exile, seemed almost giddy to talk about the new challenge league.

The new Ancestors Challenge League takes players to the Karui Afterlife, where players can compete in a tournament called the Trial of the Ancestors. The tournament pits players against the fallen chieftains of the Karui tribe, where players will earn valuable rewards.

As you compete, you'll gain favour with each of the different tribes in the Afterlife, each with their own playstyle. You can spend this favour on gaining new warriors for your team, as well as for items to use in the Trial itself.

Trial of the Ancestors also sees the return of a fan-favorite mode from a previous Challenge League: the Forbidden Sanctum. The mode has been rebalanced for the regular Path of Exile gameplay, with more varied monsters and mechanics. Relics are also now able to be traded.

The new expansion brings with it the standard updates to endgame, 16 new keystone passives in the Atlas tree. New support gems also are coming to the ARPG, and revamps to the Guardian and Chieftain Ascendancy classes change how these now useable classes play.

You can check out the full reveal in the embed above from ExileCon 2023. In case you missed it yesterday, Path of Exile 2 is now a stand-alone game rather than just the 4.0 expansion for Path of Exile.
