In an update on the EVE Online site, CCP Dopamine shared the news that CCP has canceled its Premier EVE Online event in Iceland this year, citing fears of Coronavirus. This comes on the heels of multiple gaming giants pulling their participation from major events due to the same fears.
In the post, Dopamine lays out exactly why the team felt it was necessary to cancel EVE Fanfest 2020, which couldn't have been hard as this year would have seen its return after a break last year.
In light of the recent and ongoing global developments surrounding the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus, we have taken the decision to cancel this year’s Fanfest event in Reykjavik, Iceland.
It is with a heavy heart that we make this decision, and we know this news will be disappointing to our wonderful community, but we feel absolutely compelled to follow the most responsible course of action and prioritize the safety and well-being of our attendees, our staff and of course the general Icelandic public.
The blog post acknowledges this situation could be very different within the next month, which Fanfest was scheduled to take place at the beginning of April. But without sufficient information, CCP felt necessary to cancel for the safety of all attending, including Icelanders who could be otherwise exposed due to the influx of tourists.
CCP is saying they will be providing more updates over the course of the next few weeks, so stay tuned as more information becomes available.
