It's been an eventful journey for the team at Gellyberry since the launch of the Indie game, Ethyrial Echoes of Yore. Following the launch, the team has been grappling with several post-launch issues, including a recent DDoS attack and various in-game glitches.
For those unfamiliar with the game that is regularly featured in our weekly Indie MMO Spotlight column, Ethyrial: Echoes of Yore is a hardcore, old-school MMORPG that promises challenge, risk, and adventure for players that are looking for a more group-focused type of gameplay. The game is developed by Gellyberry Studios and published by Freedom Games, and it was released on May 1, 2023 on Steam as a free-to-play title.
However, despite its ambitious features, Ethyrial: Echoes of Yore has been plagued by an abundance of issues since its launch. The game has received mostly negative reviews on Steam at the time of this article, with many players complaining about bugs, exploits, balance problems, server instability, and lack of content.
One of the most serious issues that the game has faced is a series of DDoS attacks on the Ethersalos game server, which have caused frequent disconnects and lag for players. The developers have acknowledged these attacks and have been working on resolving them. They have also apologized for the inconvenience and frustration that this has caused for the players. This comes on the heels of players complaining about being charged double for their subscriptions, and extreme server instability on launch.
But the issues don’t stop there as there have been several more ongoing problems that have angered many of the players that have attempted to play the game. Crafting exploits allowed some players to level up their professions faster than intended. The developers have announced that they will be reducing the levels for the exploiters and imposing bans for the most egregious offenders. They have also warned players not to abuse any exploits that they may find in the game.
The developers have been releasing patches to fix some of these issues, but it seems that the team finds themselves grappling with new issues that crop up every few days, such as disappearing items from the Bank/Inventory and the movement restrictions the Gellyberry detailed in today’s Discord announcements. In the interim, they have recommended a few temporary workarounds for players. If a character is stuck, players are advised to restart the game and Steam completely. Other suggestions include verifying Steam files, logging out, and waiting for the character to despawn before logging back in, or switching between characters.
Despite these challenges, the developers have not given up on their vision for Ethyrial: Echoes of Yore. As a game that appeals to a niche audience of hardcore MMORPG fans who are willing to put in the time and frustration of dealing with sme overwhelming launch woes, we hope that Gellyberry is able to wrangle the issues quickly for a more rewarding experience.
