Eternal Tombs' First Public Playtest Was Full of Queues and Crashes, But They Learned a Lot

The next test is being planned

Eternal Tombs began its first closed public pre-alpha playtest yesterday, and while there were a ton of issues, the team is learning from the issues, as they continue to plan for regular testing sessions.

The playtest went live and the team almost immediately headed to update everyone on what was going on, since demand was quickly outpacing capacity on the server. On Discord, the initial announcement early yesterday was on this need to add capacity.

“Our apologies for server issues. Right now we're getting HAMMERED (not shocking), and trying to bring up more servers asap.”

Eternal Tombs is a dynamic MMORPG inspired by classic games, but also set to have a team of live game masters determining events in the world that players will need to react to. Since this is not exactly a common practice, it would make sense that demand was higher than capacity to start. It seemed that while the team did work to increase capacity, the test was  challenging them. Since this is the first playtest, it’s not exactly a bad thing for stuff to break. As frustrating as it can be, revealing what can go wrong is an obvious step into making things go right.

Any MMORPG fan will have stories about crashes, queues, and login issues, particularly in playtests. The issue is when those make it to launch, so Triune’s positive spin on everything that went wrong is a good sign.

"We've had capacity issues all morning, server queue breaks, email password reset is past our account limit, website crashes, database problems, etc... HOWEVER, we're learning a ton and fixes are being put into place as we speak.”

As a short playtest, it is now over, but, according to Creative Director Josh Caba, the team is planning on regular testing, and will announce the next date soon.
