The developers at Battlestate Games are under fire once again as the refunds they initially said were coming to Escape from Tarkov players turned out to be vouchers that come with a few stipulations.
According to Kotaku, Battlestate Games decided that rather than give players the $50 they spent on a content upgrade outright, they would rather keep those funds and hand out vouchers for $50 worth of in-game content. In a statement made by Batlestate Games via X, formerly known as Twitter, they go over the horrific details of how to use this “refund” on new in-game content, as they state,
“All players who upgraded to The Unheard Edition from the Edge of Darkness Edition before the upgrade price was lowered are eligible for a $50 compensation. Please note that you can only use the compensation once: if the cost of all the expansions you have selected is lower than the compensation, the remaining balance cannot be used later.”
So what exactly does this mean? Well, those who get the voucher only have one shot to use the balance, meaning if you would like to purchase something for less than $50 now and save the rest for later, you can’t. The remaining funds will simply disappear and become unusable on future content.
The comments here are to be expected, as most players are appalled that the developers are giving out “coupons” as they say rather than refunds. The community most obviously feels disrespected by these vouchers and the stipulation that comes with them. Some of course made jokes such as putting a tombstone emoji and saying “Here lies Tarkov.”
As if almost adding insult to injury, Battlestate threw in two extra in-game Stash lines, which with the scope of things really brings very little value to what has been lost by those who purchased the Edge of Darkness edition, which is how this whole debacle began in the first place. It will be interesting to see how Battlestate Games reacts to this next, and whether or not they will just fix the issue and pay people back or attempt to offer more in-game rewards.
