Epic to Go Head-to-Head with Steam as It Opens Its Own Game Store Platform
Epic Games is ready to take on Steam by launching its own multi-game store platform. The company blog indicates that the store has been in progress for over five years. The Epic Games Launcher will be made available for PC and Mac and will feature, of course, Fortnite and the Unreal Engine. "We built a worldwide ecosystem supporting dozens of payment methods; and we gained great economies of scale thanks to Fortnite's growth." the blog reads.
As developers ourselves, we wanted two things: a store with fair economics, and a direct relationship with players. And we've heard that many of you want this too! Soon we'll launch the Epic Games store, and begin a long journey to advance the cause of all developers. The store will launch with a hand-curated set of games on PC and Mac, then it will open up more broadly to other games and to Android and other open platforms throughout 2019.
Of note is that the Epic Store will only take 12% for games published on its platform as opposed to 30%+ on Steam.
Other features of note:
- Direct relationship with players - purchase of a game subscribes players to the company newsfeed to help disseminate information
- Connect with creators
- Direct control of game pages by developers
- All engines welcom
