Plaion, a subsidiary of Embracer Group, has signed a worldwide publishing deal with skydance Games to publish Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra in 2025.
Skydance’s upcoming narrative driven adventure game, announced earlier this year at Epic's State of Play, features Captain America, 1940s Black Panther, Azzuri, Gabriel Jones of the Howling Commandos and a Wakandan spy named Nanali stationed in occupied Paris. This is the studio's first title, and outside of the announcement trailer, little info has been released yet about the game, but they’ve confirmed that it will have an original story.
In a press release announcing the publishing deal, Skydance co-president Julian Beak says, “For our studio’s debut title, we’re crafting an original Marvel story directed by Amy Hennig. We’re thrilled to have found a global publisher that shares our ambitious vision for the project”.
This deal also seems to be a big move between two independent companies and Plaion’s “ongoing mission to become a global force in videogame publishing”, Plaion CEO Klemens Kundratitz confirms.
Landing the rights to publish a brand new original Marvel game globally is definitely a big get. Embracer Group finished its massive restructuring efforts earlier this year and is looking ahead towards investing in fewer, but more relevant projects with potential.
As many companies that have handled layoffs and restructuring efforts over the past year have stated, much of their efforts are looking towards branching out from properties and proven efforts to build upon and sometimes release spin-offs and other takes on properties that audiences have already embraced. While not every Marvel release has quite worked out the way the developers hoped, the IP and associated characters are still in-demand.
