Embracer Group layoffs have hit animation studio Digic Pictures, which the company acquired in 2021.

Hungary-based Digic is responsible for cinematics and trailers for a variety of games, having created work for Assassin’s Creed Mirage, Lords of the Fallen, and Titan Quest II.  Forbes Hungary announced that this latest cut in Embracer Group’s ongoing restructuring, affects about 35 employees. According to Game Developer, the studio had employed about 350 staff and also worked contractually with 40-50 freelancers. They will continue to work with freelancers, according to a statement shared via GamesIndustry.biz:

“Digic would like to continue to employ some of the relevant colleagues on a fixed-term contract or on a project basis as freelance subcontractors, thus increasing the flexibility of the company's operation and the proportion of freelance experts.”

This is the latest round of changes and layoffs in Embracer’s efforts to scale back its company and subsidiaries, laying off, selling, or even closing studios. Embracer Group acquired Digic Pictures as part of its 2021 deal for Perfect World Entertainment. Other games the Digic team has created cinematics and trailers for include Marvel’s Midnight Suns, Rainbow Six Siege, and Elden Ring.

Embracer Group announced their restructuring with a note that the process would take some time. It doesn’t seem to be slowing down just yet as we head towards the end of the year. Another Embracer-owned Hungary-based studio, Zen Studios, also laid off staff last week. These are just the latest, and while cuts hurt for many, those studios are at least still open.
