Embattled Star Wars: Battlefront II Microtransaction System Taken Offline

It appears that big changes are coming to Star Wars: Battlefront II after a very rough week in the press and its community surrounding the loot box and microtransaction systems. In a move signalling potential change, it seems that microtransactions have been removed from the game. You can no longer purchase the premium currency called Crystals. Both PlayStation Network and the PC version have had the ability to buy Crystals removed completely & in game for XBox One they are out as well, though can still be purchased (for now) online through the Microsoft Store.

At this point, no word from EA has come down mere hours before the game is set for its official launch.

This has been a rough week for PR with the community and in the press as the game has been roundly castigated for both the cash / time commitment needed to unlock all heroes as well as the feeling of many that the progression system is pay to win. Early reviews have been lukewarm as well, many tainted by the same issues plaguing the game throughout the week. Add in an investigation in Belgium into whether or not loot crates are true forms of gambling and there's probably a lot of aspirin being consumed at both Dice and EA.
