Elite Dangerous Releases Its First Real-Money Ship Today, Despite Player Displeasure At The Move

The first ship Frontier is selling for real money, the Python Mk II, has officially launched today for those willing to fork over some real cash to fly the ship.

We've known about this move for a few weeks now, as Frontier Developments revealed in April, setting a new precedent for the space-faring MMO.  The newest ship, the Python Mk II, is only available right now for ARX, which is the premium currency Elite Dangerous players can purchase to buy cosmetics and, now ships, from the Frontier store.

The Python Mk II will be available for players for in-game credits earned through gameplay, but not till August, meaning those willing (and able) to spend the real money get effectively three months early access to the new hull.

As we reported before, the player reaction has ranged from unsurprised cynicism to rage towards the move, as players can now effectively buy power in Elite Dangerous. It doesn't help either that Frontier is selling two variants of the ship, complete with builds tweaked by the Frontier team, depending on how much you spend.

For more premium version, the Python Mk II Stellar, runs 33000 ARX (or around $25 since you can't buy exactly 33000 ARX in the store), while the lesser version running 16520 ARX (about $12.99). The differences are down to the extras, as the Stellar comes with that combat fit pre-installed, as well as a custom paint job, strike ship kit and more.

The Python Mk II isn't the only Elite Dangerous ship up for sale in the game store today, with a laser mining vessel Type-6 on sale for about $18 worth of ARX, while the Jumpstart Diamondback Explorer will run the same price. Finally, the AX Combat Jumpstart Alliance Chieftain runs about $18 as well, rounding out to the roster today.

Despite the initial reaction to the announcement, the Elite: Dangerous store has been seeing increased volume, causing issues with the webstore, since this morning's announcement went live. It should also be noted that you can earn ARX through regular gameplay activities.

This update overshadows the other additions made with the Update 18.04 patch,  which makes changes to Supercruise Overcharge, as well as balance changes to accommodate the new Frame Shift Drive additions.
