Frontier Developments, the developer behind Elite Dangerous and other titles, has made its first studio acquisition, buying Canadian-based Complex Games. Complex Games is behind this year’s turn-based tactical RPG Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate – Daemonhunters.

While this is Frontier’s first-ever studio buy, Complex is not a stranger to them. Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate – Daemonhunters was published under Frontier’s publishing arm, Frontier Foundry back in May.

Frontier Developments has been looking to grow, and with the start of Frontier Foundry back in 2019, the company began taking on third-party publishing. Due to these deals and working with some of the companies whose games they published, they started looking at this route for that growth plan.

According to a press release on the sale, now this also gives them an opportunity to have a new North American presence in Canada, where Complex is based. We should expect more potential moves that include acquisitions from Frontier, based on CEO Jonny Watts’ statements on the Complex deal.

“Our experience with Complex Games on Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate – Daemonhunters has been terrific, and I am delighted to welcome Noah and the team to Frontier, with a view to growing and evolving our development team in Manitoba, Canada. This is Frontier’s first acquisition and we will continue to explore opportunities to grow Frontier’s resources to further develop and nurture our portfolio.”
