With the Dune: Awakening release date less than two months out, we’re getting a better listen to the sounds and broadcasts of the world—and it’s quite immense.
The Funcom team shared that the soundtrack from the 90’s Dune 1 and 2 games will be available to listen via in-game radios. While the games are lesser spoken of, both games’ soundtracks are considered iconic pieces from the 90s, and Dune 2 specifically is considered a heavily influential game for later real-time strategy.
Philippe Ulrich and Stéphane Picq, the latter of who recently unfortunately passed away this February, composed the first game's soundtrack, called Dune: Spice Opera, while the Dune II: Battle for Arrakis soundtrack was composed by Frank Klepacki.
“Dune has a legacy in books and films – but also in video games,” Chief Creative Officer Joel Bylos said in the announcement post. “The soundtracks of Dune and Dune II were some of the greatest of the 90’s and it is a great honor to be able to share them with a new generation of players through the Communinet in Dune: Awakening.”
The music will be available via an in-game Communinet, which is not only a music station, but also “offers three channels to choose from alongside broadcasts about emergencies, sandstorms or the Landsraad.”
“One of the things you can enjoy on the radio stations is a full multi-episode radio play,” the post explains, the first episode of which will be made available on April 8. Plus, with other discussions about in-game happenings and lore, you’ll likely want to be tuned in—if you can hear it over the exploding spice.
