Dune: Awakening got an early 2025 launch window on PC, but the game is set to launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S sometime later. The team is working on the multiplatform release, and Funcom acknowledges the challenges of getting the big survival MMO to work on Xbox Series S.
According to a new interview, Funcom’s chief product officer Scott Junior says that the work ahead of them to support these different platforms and their various capabilities are why they decided to come out on PC first. “There's a lot of optimisations we need to do before we release on the Xbox. But yeah, Xbox Series S is a challenge”.
With Dune: Awakening, Funcom is launching a big, ambitious survival MMO and still wants it to work on higher end and lower spec machines, so they will continue to work on getting it to run satisfactorily and provide a good experience on the Xbox Series S.
Over the coming months, Junior says that we should look out for more people invited into the game’s beta. In particular, “Our next beta is intended to competely max out one world, and then testing that from the start to the very end with our maximum concurrent users at one time” he says. We should generally expect more invited into the beta on PC while they prepare for launch.
Supporting Xbox Series S has led to difficulties with big games before, with some, like Baldur’s Gate 3 and Cyberpunk 2077, releasing slightly different technical features between the two Xbox platforms. For Larian, there were some technical limitations for splitscreen co-op that delayed the team from releasing the Xbox version at the same time the game was released on PlayStation 5.
As for multiplatform release, we'll have to stay tuned to see if there are any similar concessions to bring the game to Xbox series S.
