Dune: Awakening finally has a launch date. Funcom announced with a new trailer that the survival MMO will hit Steam on May 20th. You can prepare for the sands and punishing conditions on Arrakis today though, because the team has just released the full Character Creator and Benchmark mode.

As for pricing, the base game will cost $49.99 and pre-orders will open soon.  Expect more details when the preorders open, but they did unveil one preorder bonus, the Terrarium of Muad’Dib. Inside this terrarium, which you can place once you get in and build yourself a base, of course, lives Dune’s desert mouse. He's a cute little part of the vast and often brutal desert.

If you’re someone that spends as long as it takes in character creation to get everything just right, well, you have two months if you start now. Plus, if you download the Character Creator and Benchmark mode, you'll also get a code to redeem at launch for the exclusive Frameblade knife skin. If you create a character, you’ll be able to import it into the game at launch.

Your character isn't just a matter of how they look, because there's deep lore at work here and your character  choices include choosing your home planet, your cast, and picking a mentor. Mentor options are Swordmaster, Bene Gesserit, Mentat, and Trooper. The mentor you choose will affect your starting abilities, but you will get access to everything later if you want to and you can choose to customize your character your way. This is a sandbox and Funcom isn’t gating abilities.

With the Benchmark mode you can check your hardware and compatibility and get a taste of what we can expect when the game is out in May.  Yes, this includes scenes like encountering a sandworm and flying over the terrain in an ornithopter.

The spice will flow in a couple of months, but you can get in and plan your path today.
