Today, an AMA by Dune: Awakening developers at Funcom took place on the official subreddit. Given this weekend will be the game’s largest beta yet, for this session, interested players got a little more into the weeds about the launch’s details, with Executive Producer Scott Junior, Creative Director Joel Bylos and Senior Game Director Viljar Sommerbakk answering questions over several hours.
One player asked a bit more about how server scaling and caps will work. Certain areas, as Junior explains, will have an adjustable player cap, but it’s likely inevitable that certain servers will fill up in general. The Beta worlds will allow 40 players or so per area, but given the Deep Desert is bigger, concurrent player caps will fluctuate based on area.
Players won’t be able to transfer characters on launch entirely, but they plan on permitting it within “worlds” in the future. The Beta won’t allow server visits, but the team claims they’ll have it available at launch.
As for the longer lifespan of the game, Bylos says that while much of the endgame relies on “player activity cycles,” they plan on trying to add more “finite” content over the years, as Funcom did for Conan Exiles.
Also, very importantly for some of you, there’ll be “customization options that let you change the appearance of your armor and equipment.”
There are a ton of similarly nitty-gritty questions asked by the community in the AMA, and many were answered in the few hours they had. So if you’re curious about anything (except roleplaying, which they are dodging a lot for some reason?) before Dune: Awakening’s beta kicks off, it’s worth digging in.
