Just under two weeks after release Capcom announced that Dragon’s Dogma 2 has achieved 2.5 million units sold. It’s an impressive feat given all the controversy surrounding the title since its launch. The Dragon’s Dogma series has sold 10 million units total since the release of the first title in 2012.

The original Dragon’s Dogma sold one million units in its first month, which means the sequel has over doubled the sales of the original game in the same time frame. Capcom is pointing to the success of its marketing campaign as the driver of the huge increase in sales:

“Capcom carried out various global-facing promotional activities with the aim of attracting not only long-time fans of the series but newcomers as well, including the launch of a free application that let users create their player avatars prior to the game’s release, as well as in-game pawns made in collaboration with celebrities in various countries and Japanese national athletes.”

Despite the sales success for Capcom, Dragon’s Dogma II’s release has been marred by numerous controversies. The game launched with a number of microtransactions, poor performance, and even lacked the ability to start a new save file until a recent patch rectified that.
