EVE Online is the subject of a new documentary by prolific YouTube documentarian Fredrick Knudsen. Known for his series "Down the Rabbit Hole," Knudsen did just that when detailing the twenty-year history of EVE Online in a six-hour video.
To say EVE Online is complex is a gross understatement. It's an intricate web of alliances, players, history, wars, trade, infrastructure and so much more, mirroring the real world in many respects. It's an MMO that has broken world records thanks to the exploits of its players, and has not one but two history books written about the game.
Knudsen's documentary explores this history, breaking the video into twenty-eight sections that touch on the various touchstones over the years. The video itself is nearly six hours long, an hour under the combined run time of The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring Extended Edition and The Two Towers Extended Edition, to put it into some context.
Since the documentary debuted on November 1st, the EVE Online episode of Down the Rabbit Hole has been viewed over 1.5 million times. The documentary itself took Knudsen two years to make, first being announced back in June 2021 to the channel's Patreon subscribers.
It's a chonky documentary (and it's not the only EVE documentary to debut this year, either), but one well worth the watch. I'm only a few hours in, but it's quite the journey, and it's incredible to see how the MMO has been shaped, changed and made into the sci-fi epic that it is today, twenty years later.
With the success of the documentary, it stands to reason that capsuleers might see many new players giving the MMO a shot, especially as the latest expansion, Havoc releases next week.
