The Diablo II: Resurrected team has an update on the current PTR (2.5), the upcoming start of season 2, and the newly added, in testing, Terror Zones feature.
When it comes to seasons, the team had announced that they intended to have them last for four months each, but there has been some delay in getting 2.5 out and the eventually start of season 2. Part of that has to do with Terror Zones, the recently-added to the PTR feature that enables several additional options for level progression.
Designed as near-endgame content to help players get to level-99 without just having to spam slay Diablo, Baal, and Nihlathak, the team “teetered back and forth on the line of “Should we do this or not?” many times throughout development and with that it caused a little bit of a delay on the Season transition”. Because of the need to test this new feature, they have already received important feedback, such as players noticing some zones were not really great to have Terror Zones in, and some found them too easy. This last group were overwhelmingly Hammerdin players, so this has caused the devs to have some balance conversations. As for the zone locations, there will be some tweaks there too, as well as decisions on how long a terrorized zone will stay that way.
They’re still finalizing the feature, where the zones will be, and how to unlock them. Also received requests for this to be added to single-player, but that's on the table for somewhere down the line after they tune the live version.
We can expect more clarity soon on the timeline for when to expect 2.5 to be released in its final form, and when the new season will begin. The update shared says in the coming week, they’ll have a better idea on how it will all come together.
