In the midst of this absolutely hot year for ARPGs, and arguably this biggest game of the franchise itself, Diablo 4 is giving players a chance to give it a spin. From now until September 23, Diablo 4 will be free to try out—but there’s a pretty serious restriction on progression.
Players can download it for free via the Battle.net client and get going on their characters. Unfortunately, you'll only be able to play up to level 20. In an ARPG, depending on your speed, that can be as long as a few hours or as quick as under one hour.
The good news is, if you do like your character and class enough in this trial version, it’ll stay persistent in your account if you do decide to purchase a full edition of the game. The Standard Edition game will be on sale for “up to 40%” off, at $29.99 on Blizzard’s Battle.net store.

Unfortunately, this sale won’t apply for any of the editions that include the upcoming expansion, Vessel of Hatred. Buying the game on sale and then buying the expansion separately will cost only one cent more than just buying the Expansion Bundle, at $29.99 + $39.99 versus a bulk total of $69.99—so you really can just wait a little longer if you want.
If you’re still enjoying one of the other myriad ARPGs this year, or even just waiting for the free-to-play Path of Exile 2’s upcoming beta, it may not seem like a steal. But if you’re curious about how Diablo 4 plays now that its launch is well behind it, this is a good chance.
