Destiny 2: Lightfall is now live, with Bungie’s latest expansion continuing the “Light & Darkness Saga”. In addition to new continuing story, there's a new subclass power, a new mode, social features, and much more on the way.
If you've been enjoying Destiny 2 for a while, you should be familiar with the story, where the Guardians will have to prevent the apocalypse by stopping The Witness and its disciple, Calus. That sounds like enough of a challenge on its own, but of course it won’t be that simple. The Shadow Legion, which follows Calus’ presence, wants to cause more devastation as well, including with their latest, the Tormentors. Yet, you’ll have allies too, the Cloud Striders.
The new subclass power in Lightfall is called Strand. Each class can take advantage of new attacks and a new grapple ability to change mobility and broaden movement options. Bungie describes Strand as powered by Darkness, and an ability to “pluck the threads that bind the universe together”, so you’ll get to discover just how your class can best use it.
There are two new social systems in this expansion. Commendations will let you award commendations to fireteam members, and Guardian Ranks will show each Guardian's skill and experience, and getting commendations will help raise those ranks. Also in Lightfall is a series of new loadouts and mod customization features that should speed up and expand customization. You'll be able to save your gear and mods into Loadout slots that you'll have access to as you play.
Season of Defiance, the first Lightfall season, is also opening today. You’ll have to investigate the Pyramid outputs that have been appearing and stand up for humanity. Defiant Battlegrounds is the new mode for the Season, and it’s a three-person mode where you can use Awoken powers to challenge the Shadow Legion.
Of course, this is just the beginning of the content. Terminal Overload is a new destination activity, where you have to beat back the Vex and Cabal. The first new raid, Root of Nightmares, is coming on March 10th, along with the latest World First race. Root of Nightmares sees a mysterious threat emerge from some unknown time and place. From here, it’s time to investigate and fight back. Also on the way in May is the 2023 Guardian Games event, so it’s a good time to get prepared.
