Destiny 2 director Joe Blackburn will be leaving Bungie next month.
In a series of posts on X, Blackburn stated that it’s time to “pass the torch” and embark “on a new adventure outside the walls of Bungie.” Aside from being the director of Destiny 2, Blackburn also served as Destiny’s lead raid designer.
This ritual will be especially meaningful to me personally, as it will also serve as a moment to pass the torch of Destiny 2 Game Director to the next era of leadership as I head on a new adventure outside the walls of Bungie.

Tyson Green will step into the role as Destiny 2’s director following Blackburn’s departure. Green has a long legacy in the space, having worked on Halo’s PvP and developed Exotic weapons in the original Destiny. Blackburn notes that Green has been an integral member of Bungie going all the way back to Myth II, which released in 1998.
It’s been a challenging time for Bungie as of late, with a round of layoffs hitting the studio back in October, backlash over a ‘Pay-to-Win’ starter pack, and content delays. The Final Shape was originally scheduled to release on February 27, but has since been pushed back to June.
Destiny 2: The Final Shape releases on the PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC on June 4.
