Continuing on with its gameplay unveiling, the latest Dune: Awakening blog previews the Mentat “school” of gameplay, with nifty Hunter-Seekers, turrets and more.
In Dune lore generally, the Mentat came about after the use of “thinking machines”—basically, super-intelligent AI and the sentient computers that were inevitable as a result—were banned throughout the universe: “Thou shalt not make a machine in the likeness of a human mind.”
As a result, through brutal lower-class training, the Mentat became a school of mental training and technique desired by the universe’s leaders and leaders-to-be, occupying roles such as data analysts and tacticians. In the context of Dune Awakening, the role of a Mentat translates to that of a battlefield strategist or tactician.
More practically, the Mentat in Dune: Awakening are able to deploy battlefield assets, including poisons, turrets, and a Shield Wall. It seems per the trailer that certain abilities also enable players to more easily hit the weak points of enemies, create illusions to trick foes or send in the Hunter-Seeker mini-weapon to assassinate targets.
Players will be able to mix and match some abilities from other “schools,” such as those for the already-previewed Bene Gesserit and Trooper. Plus, there’ll be a stream about “A Glimpse Of Mid-To-Endgame” next week by the Funcom community team.
