Defiance Defies Death As Sci-Fi's Post-Apocalyptic MMO Shooter Re-Launches Today

For niche media fans, it’s a heck of a holiday, as the Defiance MMO shooter has finally re-launched under new management in its final shutdown state. 

Defiance started as a “transmedia” tie-in to the Defiance SciFi television show, launching simultaneously and with some developments playing alongside each other. It closed in 2021, but was picked back up by Fawkes Games. Sadly, all player data was lost since then, so all players will need to start fresh. 

The multiplayer title launches as a free-to-play game today; the devs previously said that the game is almost entirely in the same state as it was when it shut down in 2021, with the exception of some crucial changes to “fiction points” and “controversial weapons.” 

In a “What To Expect” blog, the team shared some gameplay videos, as well as laid out some of, well, what to expect. They also had a stress test, so you know they’re serious about making sure it works from day one.  

Can it revive its relevance in the current market saturated with post-apocalyptic MMO shooters? It seems Fawkes Games and some of our own writers are hoping so.
