In an interview with the BBC, Guillaume Broche CEO and Creative Director of Sandfall Interactive, revealed that the development behind Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was spurred on by the desire to “do something different.”
The interview also revealed that much of the core team for Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was assembled in less conventional ways. Jennifer Svedberg-Yen, the lead writer for now one of 2025’s most critically acclaimed titles, was actually found on Reddit — though she was applying for an entirely different role at the time.
In previous reports, it was revealed that the composer for Clair Obscur was found through Soundcloud, and that Broche had reached out to him.
For those unfamiliar with Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, it’s a turn-based RPG that shares similar DNA to Final Fantasy X, Lost Odyssey, and Paper Mario. (Take that as you will.) Set in a world inspired by the Belle Epoque period, the narrative follows a cast of characters set on preventing the end of the world as they know it.
