CipSoft, the developer behind pioneering MMORPG Tibia, and the upcoming Persist Online, is taking over development on The Settlers Online.
The browser-based strategy title has been developed by Ubisoft Blue Byte, and Ubisoft is bowing out after more than 15 years. Now that the plans have been announced, The Settlers Online will migrate over to CipSoft’s infrastructure and the company will integrate its payment system and more in this next phase. The game’s development team will move over to CipSoft’s Dusseldorf office, and existing players shouldn't see any interruption. Ubisoft will retain the Settlers IP.
In a press release, co-founder Stephan Vogler says, “The Settlers Online, with its rich tradition and passionate community, is a perfect match for CipSoft. We have always prioritized sustainable growth and long-term success over short-term gains or rapid expansion”. Vogler also says that they saw the game’s potential and plan to invest in its future.
CipSoft recently announced the addition of the first-ever new vocation to Tibia–running since 1997–the Monk. Developing and running games with dedicated communities on a long-term path really is something they're familiar with, and Vogler says The Settlers Online won’t take anything away from work on Tibia and Persist Online.
