Chinese 'Online Ethics Review Committee' Bans PUBG, Fortnite, Paladins & Ring of Elysium

Earlier this month, the Chinese government revealed the formation of the "Online Ethics Review Committee" that would determine if games published in China violate current legislation with regard to social norms and ethics. The committee has reviewed and banned several games and indicate that several others "need corrective action". The list of banned games include PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, Ring of Elysium, Paladins, Fortnite, H1Z1 & Alliance of Valiant Arms.

The above-mentioned titles were banned due to "blood and gore, vulgar content" as well as for "overly revealing female characters".

Games that have been put on notice for "corrective action" include League of Legends, World of Warcraft, Diablo 3 and Overwatch. These games are cited for a number of reasons including "overly revealing female characters, distorted concepts of history & culture", inharmonious chat rooms", "game visuals promoting incorrect values", "game missions include fraud".

These are not the first games to be placed under the microscope by the Online Ethics Review Committee. Other games that have fallen under scrutiny and are either in for corrective action or are under an outright ban include:

  • Arena of Valor
  • Blade & Soul
  • Chu Liu Xiang
  • Westward Journey
  • Code: EVA
  • The Legend of Mir 3
  • Swords of Legend Online
  • Free Fire Battlegrounds
  • Knives Out
  • Quantum Matrix
