CD Projekt Red Announces Fool's Theory Developing a Full Unreal Engine 5 Remake of The Witcher

Just in time for the 15th anniversary of the very first Witcher game, CD Projekt Red and developer Fool’s Theory will remake the 2007 game in Unreal Engine 5.

Earlier this month, CD Projekt Red announced a full slate of upcoming projects, including several games in The Witcher series and Cyberpunk 2077 franchise. The earlier update included this remake under a code name, Canis Majoris.

Now that the company has revealed the remake of the RPG that started it all, we know that the game will be built from the ground up with Unreal Engine 5. This will use the toolset that CDPR is using for the new Witcher games.

Work will be done, under CD Projekt Red’s supervision and guidance,  by Fool’s Theory, a Polish development studio that counts several former Witcher series developers on the team.  Fool’s Theory CEO, Jakub Rokosz, says in a release on the new remake that, “I am very happy that my professional paths have crossed again with fellow developers from the time of working together on The Witcher 2 and The Witcher 3. Especially when it's a remake of a project that is so close to our hearts”. With devs on the team that have direct franchise experience, this should reassure those who never expected this remake.

Earlier, when the team announced that there was a new game in the series in development, they stated a commitment to pivoting over to Unreal Engine 5 for the next Witcher game and future projects (except the Cyberpunk 2077 expansion).

The Witcher Remake is now official, but there are no real details other than these just yet. CDPR is going to take some time to give those details, as the official announcement says. Even the CDPR Twitter confirmation asks for patience:

“We want to do this right, so please be patient — it's gonna be a while until we can share more details.”
