Bungie is celebrating 10 years of Destiny this week with some news on the future of the series with game director Tyson Green previewing what’s in store.
Bungie’s layoffs at the studio have understandably impacted the scope of what the team will be able to deliver in the future, so the massive annual expansions players are used to seeing released for Destiny 2 will no longer be part of the game’s content cadence. These expansions may also allow Bungie to experiment with more non-linear experiences similar to Dreaming City or Metroidvanias or even roguelikes and survival shooters.
Going forward, Bungie will release two medium sized expansions and four free content updates for Destiny 2 each year. The first of which is titled Codename Frontiers and will begin rolling out in Summer 2025. Frontiers will include the Apollo and Behemoth expansions, with both having their own seasons and major game updates. Bungie provided a handy roadmap with more granular details.
In the short term, 10th anniversary festivities will bring new digital and physical items, a new Legend title granting players early access to purchase Bungie Rewards NERF LMTD Destiny 2 Ace of Spades Blaster before its release in October, and in person events in Los Angeles, New York, and London featuring the art of Destiny.
