Bungie has confirmed that “a former artist” copied an artist’s work and used it in their PvP extraction shooter, Marathon.
An artist, known as Antireal, took to social media to say “the Marathon alpha released recently and its environments are covered with assets lifted from poster designs i made in 2017” in a post on X. Then came more posts to lay out a case by showing art in comparison to Marathon screenshots, “bungie is of course not obligated to hire me when making a game that draws overwhelmingly from the same design language i have refined for the last decade, but clearly my work was good enough to pillage for ideas and plaster all over their game without pay or attribution”.
Bungie later confirmed, via the @MarathonDevTeam X account, that Antireal’s art was indeed used without permission, calling it an “oversight” and said they are “Conducting a thorough review of our in-game assets” with special attention on the work of the artist they say was responsible for lifting Antireal’s work.
They also said they reached out “and are committed to do right by the artist”.
