Bungie's upcoming expansion for Destiny 2 was reportedly delayed, though the company never came out and confirmed those reports. Now they have, confirming that Destiny 2: The Final Shape will officially launch on June 4th, with prelude content leading up to the release.

The reports of the delay came out alongside the news that Bungie laid off over 100 developers at the Destiny 2 studio, which Bungie's CEO attributed to its flagship title "underperforming." While Bungie confirmed the layoffs in a post on their blog (as well as various affected developers taking to Twitter to confirm they were laid off as well), they never directly addressed the delays to the upcoming expansion.

Now they have confirmed that Destiny 2: The Final Shape will take shape on June 4th, 2024. This means that the upcoming Season of the Wish will be extended through to the new release date, with the team adding new content to fill the gap between February and June.

Coming in April, Bungie announced a prelude of sorts to The Final Shape, which is aimed at getting player's Guardians prepared for the expansion drop.

"In February, this will include new weekly progression-based quests called Wishes, and the launch of Moments of Triumph with unique rewards.  Next, we’re moving Guardian Games up to March with a refreshed focus on class vs. class competition. Then, beginning in April, we’re delivering a two-month content update available to everyone called Destiny 2: Into the Light, which will prepare players for their Guardian’s journey into the Traveler. All of this is in addition to the ongoing efforts from our PvP Strike Team, including three new PvP maps dropping in May. "

Destiny 2's Game Director Joe Blackburn also posted a video explaining the delay and diving into a bit more detail about the upcoming content, including the new dungeon Warlord's Ruin. You can check that video out in the embed below.
