If you've been looking forward to the upcoming Destiny 2 expansion, The Witch Queen, you may be disappointed unless you fork over the cost of the Digital Deluxe edition. Bungie has confirmed that the new dungeons will be gated content if you've got the standard edition.
There has been some community speculation and Bungie Community Manager Cozmo23 responded on Reddit, confirming that the new content will arrive in separate tiers. If you order the Digital Deluxe, you're good to go. you'll be able to access everything The Witch Queen has to offer when it launches, including all four seasons and the two dungeons. But if you go for the standard edition, well, those will be closed off to you unless you buy access separately later.
"If you get the Standard Edition, you can still upgrade to the Deluxe Edition to get the dungeons later," reads the confirmation. There are also plans for an individual release that you can get, but there's no info on just what this will entail or how the cost of buying access to them individually might compare to a digital deluxe upgrade. "We will also be offering a separate way for you to purchase the Dungeons in the future, but they will not be included in the Season passes," concludes the details, along with a notice that Bungie will announce more when ready.
The number of ways that a game may be accessed and gated is nothing new to be debated, but the response to this news is widespread disappointment, and it's not hard to see why. The Witch Queen expansion for Destiny 2 is set for release on February 22, 2022, so there's time for the details to be worked out and to see if the news moves more digital deluxe sales in the meantime.
